According to a recent report from Energy News Africa, the Nigerian federal government has received approximately 700 billion Naira from the Federal Accounts Allocation Commission (FAAC) to install 1.1 million electricity meters nationwide by December 2025, in order to close a long-standing metering gap.

Nigerian Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu announced the news at the 2025 Nigeria Energy Forum in Lagos, themed “Electricizing Nigeria through Investment, Innovation and Partnerships.”

Adrab explained that the initiative is part of the Presidential Measurement Initiative (PMI) – a comprehensive strategy aimed at improving transparency, strengthening income protection, and eradicating the decades-old practice of "estimated bills" that has plagued the electricity industry.

Adrab pointed out that the PMI will complement the 3.2 million meters being procured by the World Bank-supported Distribution Sector Recovery Project (DISREP), and the combined efforts are expected to fill the national metering gap within the next five years.

2025 will be a pivotal year for Nigeria's electricity metering system, moving towards greater intelligence, localization, and standardization.
