THE SMART METER SCALE REPLACEMENT PERIOD HAS COME
After the domestic smart meter transformation was completed in 2009-2015, the batch of meters has now entered the replacement cycle.
Smart meter bidding starts to recover
State Grid smart meters began centralized bidding in 2009, reaching a high point of bidding from 2014 to 2015, and the amount of bidding dropped to a low point in the first half of 2017-2018.
From the second half of 2018 to the first half of 2019, the bidding amount of the State Grid has started to pick up significantly. In 2018, the centralized bidding of the State Grid reached more than 54 million, which is a larger increase than that of 37.7 million in 2017. The main reason is that the number of bids in the second half of 2018 (the second batch) reached 32.17 million, which increased more. In 2019, the first batch of bids for State Grid smart meters reached more than 38.2 million, and it is expected that there will be a good recovery of bids throughout the year.
Benefiting from the rebound in bids for smart meters from the State Grid, the performance of some mainstream electricity meter companies has rebounded significantly. In the first half of 2019, the operating income of Haixing Power and Wasion Holdings increased by 16.69%, 18.71%, and 16.25% year-on-year, and net profit increased by 72.65%, 168.40%, and 45.83% year-on-year.
Scale rotation cycle is expected to come
State Grid has not launched a new round of smart meter transformation in a large area, which may be related to its plan for implementing new standards. It is expected that the new standard of the State Grid will be released next year, and the smart meter transformation will be further accelerated. At the same time, new functions and requirements of communications (wireless, Bluetooth), remote control (some will increase miniature circuit breakers) may be added to the new State Grid standard, and the output value of electricity meters may be greatly improved.
In the next cycle of smart meter rotation, the share of advantageous companies is expected to increase. The main reason is that in the past few years, the industry bidding process has declined, and some meter companies may have gradually withdrawn from the industry. In 2015, about 120 companies participated in the country. Online bidding has dropped to about 90. Second, the next generation of smart meters has more functional modules and higher technical difficulties. The number of companies with relevant capabilities and qualifications will decline. Advantageous companies are expected to take advantage of product replacement opportunities.
